Becoming an Ideal Leader

By Erick Nikenya

Any ideal leader gets frustrated whenever things aren't working according to the organization's ethics. At times the employees may be trying but there's nothing to show that they worked. If you are a leader who is experiencing these worries, it is time you started solving the mess.

Almost all humans love the idea of giving orders. Nevertheless, being a leader will also come with its demerits because adopting a follow-the-leader mindset is the worst part of the post. If you've got the feeling you can do something to change the situation, the roles will be easy. You have to show leadership, even if it is with family and friends..

Some people have the mindset that good leaders are made and they were not born to be leaders. In some cases there are leaders who were born with the leadership skills. Nonetheless, such skills may not be helpful particularly if you don't have drive, experience, passion and regular practice. A good leader shouldn't be happy with the way he or she is currently, but instead he should study continuously to boost his skills.

First of all, let's have a look at what it takes to be a leader. The first requirement is that you have to be able to influence workers so the goals are accomplished. Many people have the mentality that leadership is all about power. Rather than harassing workers, you need to try other alternatives such as to encourage them. Your job was to be a good leader and not to act like a boss because you are nearly of the same level.

How does one get people to follow you?

Folks will follow you only if they're sure that your ways are better. Like the bumper sticker that says "don't follow me because am lost too", the same trend applies for leadership. If you do not know the organization's vision and the protocol, how do you expect other workers to follow you?

A good leader is not judged based on what he made folk do. A leader is ideal if he is well informed of the organization's vision. If you have won the trust of the employees, they will do anything you say. High ethics, trustworthiness and good relationships help build confidence and trust.

Another requirement is good communication skills. A leader qualifies to be excellent the time his communication skills are improved. You must be ready to share your skills and experience.

A good leader must be good at making judgments. This means that you have to be capable of making good choices after considering both the positive and negative side. Those people you are leading rely on the choices you make.

Being a good leader does not mean that you know everything. Therefore, you should seek advice from other competent members. Take your time to realise the skills of your subordinates and then come up with ways which will help you get the most out of them.

An ideal leader takes his time to make decisions. In short, skills in leadership are not learned in a day. Always recall that you aren't the only party.
