Shettles Method's Rule to Conceive a Boy

By Abriana Misna

Today, a lot of couples want particular gender for their baby. A survey showed that more than 83% of couples want a child with a particular gender, male or female. A study conducted by Dr. Landrum B. Shettles in the 1960s, then developed into a method to determine the sex of the child's naturally. This method is then popularly called the Shettles Method.

Dr. Landrum B. Shettles built the method based on the concept of the differences in the character of sperm carrying male chromosomes (Y chromosome) and sperm carrying female chromosome (X chromosome).

Differences in the character of those two chromosomes are as follows:

1. Male chromosomes carrying sperm is able to swim faster to the egg than female chromosomes carrying sperm.

2. However, the Y-sperm bearer more vulnerable and die faster than X sperm-bearer.

3. Acids / Bases. X-bearer sperm is also more resistant to acidic conditions, while the Y-bearer sperm will die quickly when live in an acidic environment.

4. Ratio. The more the number of sperm, the higher the ratio between the Y-bearer sperm by X-bearer sperm. The fewer the number of sperm, the easier to found X-bearer than the Y-bearer sperm.

Based on the four characters above, shettles method constructed a set of rules for determine a specific gender. If you want a boy, here are the rules of the shettles method to have a baby boy:

1. Having sex during ovulation may increase the chances of getting a boy. Avoid having sex (unless wearing a condom) after ovulation or before the period of the ovulation ended.

2. Increase the ratio of the number of Y-bearer sperm in men, by refraining from ejaculation for 4-5 days before the sex is done.

3. Avoid using tight pants, hot tubs, sauna, and cycling. These activities will increase the temperature of the scrotum and causes decreased sperm counts and ratio of Y-bearer sperm.

4. Female orgasm will make the vagina becomes more alkaline, favorable for the Y-bearer sperm.

5. for the female partner, stay away from high acid foods, and multiply the foods that have a low pH.

Conclusion

Although shettles method is built on the facts of science, but there are few studies that actually prove that shettles method is not effective in determining the sex of the child. Dr. Landrum B. Shettles himself claims that the success rate of this method shettles reached 70% -90%. Some studies also suggest that shettles method may actually complicate the couple to have children. In the end, the most essential is the pregnancy itself, as a great grace and worthy of grateful.
