Some ESL Classroom Games For Students

By Nicole Guy

ESL or English as a second language, has been a subject that is very important in the education system. Since English is the primary language of the world, it is important to learn it. That is why some ESL classroom games have been made so that learners will retain their lessons.

One game which is very good for a more grown up class is called concept mapping. Teachers will put students into groups of probably no more that four. Then a word or phrase will be written on the board. The objective of this game is to come up words directly related to the given one.

One of the most fundamental activities that have been used is called mapping. This is where the lecturer writes a word or phrase, and the students will form other words or phrases related to the given one. It is a good activity because it stimulates thinking. This will help increase their vocabulary and think imaginatively. This also will help them learn new sentence structures.

One of the most important things in teaching is interaction. If students practice what they learn, they do better. That is why most teachers would let their students engage in debates. Through debates, the students would learn not only the language, but how to form correct and clear sentences as well as think critically. So it is kind of like killing three birds with one stone.

If the teacher is handling a rather adult class, then a debate will be a good activity. This will force the language out of the learners and encourage interaction. This will appeal to most adult students.

When planning esl classroom games, always make sure they are fun and will always encourage the participation of each and every student. These ideas are pretty good as they have been proven to be effective in a normal classroom setting. Students will definitely enjoy these great activities.
