Faithful Love

By Brianna Bennett

She honors the nameless one and not the one true God. I am just now starting to get into it a little bit. Then there were the characters that were scattered throughout the story who each in their own way added a strength. The Kerr women continue their journey of love, sorrow, and redemption in Mine is the Night. Liz Curtis Higgs has a unique ability to make you feel as if you are a fly on the wall of the Kerr household. It's thick with drama and emotion.

Elisabeth, a Highlander by birth and a Lowlander by marriage, has secrets hidden in her heart and past.

There was no bad language.

Set in Scotland and written in the third-person point of view of Elisabeth, the wife of a titled gentlemen, the intricate plot unfolds during the Jacobite Rebellion.

I loved, loved, loved this book. By setting the Biblical story of Ruth and Naomi in 18th century Scotland, she presents a fresh look at the familiar tale. The end of the book is merely a beginning for the second one, and I look forward to reading it. Here Burns My Candle is by far her finest offering. And a historical novel. People are choosing sides and the Kerr sons enlist to fight for Prince Charlie.

Opposite nationalities and religious faiths weave their ways within the family - often causing divisions, and sometimes unity.

You just might, too! Well-researched Scottish history made me think I should dig into a history book on my own.

When I saw that Francine Rivers (my favorite modern author) recommended Here Burns My Candle, I was more than eager to read both books in this two-part series.

In 1745 Edinburgh, Highlander Lady Elisabeth Kerr marries royalist Lowlander Lord Donald Kerr. For me this is a story that makes you think, I found myself thinking, "What would I do?" I picked it up late at night and thought "oh no, I'm going to have to use my brain on this book" (due to the time period and Scottish language), but I quickly found myself immersed in the story.

I'm excited for the sequel, I can't wait to see what happens to the Kerr women next! I cannot wait until book 2 in this series is available in 2011 - Mine Is the Night. The story takes place during the Jacobite Uprising of 1745 in Scotland. I've never read Liz Curtis Higgs before and am of two minds of her writing.
