Replacing Glasses Lenses: Do It Yourself Repairs

By Cathy Sourbridge

Anyone who has ever worn eyeglasses knows that they are a pain to repair. Not only do they have to be kept clean and unscratched, but there are times when minor accidents may cause the glass to fall out of the frame. In these cases there are some simple steps for replacing glasses lenses at home.

When a person has a lens fall out of the frame it can be difficult to get back in. This is because they are a little bigger than the frame. There are different techniques for putting them back in, whether the eyeglass frames are made from plastic or metal.

Many frames are no made from plastic and these are generally much easier to fix than those made from metal as they are much more flexible. First the person should find the groove or bevel in the frame and lower one side of their lens into it. After that they can just use their thumb to push the other side down gently until it pops into the other groove.

Metal frames can be a bit trickier because the metal will not stretch which makes it difficult to replace without damage to the lens or frames. This operation will require the assistance of a small screwdriver. These are usually purchased as part of an eyeglass maintenance kit which can be found in many different stores.

Take the mini screwdriver and loosen the screw that holds the arm to the frame being careful not to strip the threads in the process. The screw is tiny so put it in a safe place or it can be lost easily. After the screw is loose just use the same technique as before to put the lens back into place.

Doing things like replacing glasses lenses is not that difficult and should not require help from an eye doctor. People should be careful not to be too rough, as they can easily damage their eyeglasses in the process. Doing minor repairs at home should be easy with little patience and know how.
