Avoiding The Unexpected Stain

By Kathleen Burch

In a perfect world nothing will happen to your wedding dress. After spending so much time picking your wedding dress, the last thing you want to happen is an unexpected disaster. This will be a treasure you'll want to keep together. When it comes to protecting your dress, prevention is key.

When you bring your dress home, you will need to find a safe place to store it. If you will have your dress for a few weeks before your wedding, the hanger needs to be padded, and not exposed to sunlight. It will need to hang free without being touched by any other items even when hung in a closet. Dust is the enemy, so keep the dress covered. The dress should also have the opportunity to breathe, so a plastic drape is not a good idea. Your best bet is a white, unbleached cotton sheet.

What's the matter with a garment bag?

If the smallest bit of moisture gets in there, mildew could set in and make the dress smell musty. Plastic materials do emit gases and these will mean the dress may yellow. It's not worth the risk.

Another option is to wrap the dress in tissue paper and fold it.

How to prevent stains:

Other than the obvious pitfalls of food and drink at the wedding reception there are other accidents waiting to happen like the flowers and the walk through bubbles if that is part of your wedding. When choosing the menu for your wedding, pick spill friendly foods. Pollen producing flowers could be a disaster as well. Ask the florist to remove any potential problems from the flower.

Wedding day jitters can cause stains. Use a strong deodorant to avoid underarm stains. Makeup also could cause stains, so when putting on your dress, use a light pillow case or cloth over your head to prevent smudging. After you put on the dress, do some touch ups, but keep the dress covered. If you are going to be traveling in the dress, you will need to put a towel under you, no matter how clean the car is. Be sure not to take chances. When you're done with the dress for the night, wrap it in a white sheet, then take it to a cleaner that you trust. To store your dress you will need it to be cleaned first.
