Ways In Which Dedicated Servers Vary From A Normal Personal Computer

By Alfonso Hinton

Many people do not quite know if there is a difference between a dedicated server and a home PC. When choosing to have own hosting for either your home or office PC, you are bound to encounter this query. The hardware in home PCs will have lower specs than the dedicated server's though they could be similar. A home PC can therefore be used as a dedicated server though it should not be expected to deliver the same capabilities. There is a notable difference in performance, capabilities and reliability. When considering hosting options, comparing dedicated servers and home PCs is the same as comparing walking and driving. This is due to the fact that much as you may get to your designated place, one of the options will be highly inconvenient and less effective.

Home PCs are in effect meant to be used as work stations for working on projects either by different people at different times or by an individual. Most home PCs will therefore have specs that help in performing this kind of operation. They are designed in such a way as to be able to handle specific functions and applications. In order to be able to handle much bigger workloads, dedicated servers come fitted with relevantly high specs.

They will also be more accommodating and easily scalable which makes them suitable for use in server hosting. Capacity difference is the main advantage that dedicated servers have over home PCs. It means that the home PC will not be able to deliver the same quality of service as the dedicated server.

The other main difference besides the specs of the hardware used in home PCS and dedicated servers is the location of the machines. A dedicated server will often be found in a data center or server room that is specifically designed for dedicated hosting purposes. The server room or data centre provides sufficient security, power backup, temperature, bandwidth, controls and all other server requirements. This is to ensure that the people hosted on the server enjoy high quality and uninterrupted service. Most of these facilities are not liable to be found in a home PC. This makes them vulnerable to frequent downtime and significantly reduces the quality of service that they offer. The dedicated server is set to operate in an environment that is specifically formulated for high quality hosting.

Very few people, if any, will accept to have their websites hosted on a home PC. For anyone seriously looking to host anything substantial, this option is not viable. It could be used by those looking for a server to host for testing purposes but nothing beyond that. Most home internet connections cannot handle the required bandwidth for effective hosting. All those trying to access sites hosted on your home PC will definitely get frustrated due to the slow connection to your server. Besides these, there are still other differences between the two though they revolve around capabilities and functionalities. The environment in which the dedicated server and home PC work under and the specs are the main factors that add to these differences.
