An Annual Christmas Play Is a Well Loved Christmas Tradition

By Yvonne Brixey

Every Christmas, one of our family's favorite Christmas traditions is to gather the family together and take in a Christmas play. Christmas plays are put on in pretty much every town in America, every Christmas season. Some cities are even big enough to have more than one Christmas play going on at a time. In fact, in my city, I could go to a different Christmas play every night this week! Christmas plays are very popular and are a well loved Christmas activity for families all over.

Does your family go to a Christmas play every Christmas season? What kinds of Christmas plays have you seen? Which Christmas play was your favorite? Last year, my family went to go see the classic 'A Christmas Carol' at a local theater. While the Christmas play 'A Christmas Carol' is very popular, and I'm sure everybody has seen at least a dozen different variations of 'A Christmas Carol,' it is still a Christmas play favorite.

The Christmas play was put on at small, local theater, and there were only about 50 seats in the whole interior, but in a way, the Christmas play turned out better that way. Because the venue was so small, the Christmas play, 'A Christmas Carol,' was cast with a very flexible cast. I could tell that this flexible cast had spend hours and hours rehearsing this Christmas play, and that the flexible cast would have been able to react to any abnormalities the Christmas play could have thrown at them. In fact, at one point, a part of the simple interior set fell over and instead of breaking their stride and freaking out, this cast flexible and skillfully put that accident into the Christmas play as if it was supposed to have happened all along.

Another great thing about having the Christmas play, 'A Christmas Carol,' at such a small venue was the set for the Christmas play was incredibly simple set wonderful beautiful. Walking up the sidewalk and into the building where Christmas plays are set, we walked among a beautifully simple exterior set. The lawn had street lamps decorating for Christmas and there was a beautiful Christmas wreath on the door. This proved to me that even a simple exterior set can be a beautiful exterior set for a Christmas play.

And if we thought that a Christmas play that offered both a flexible cast as well as a beautiful yet simple exterior set was more than enough, we were wrong! The interior set, though a simple interior set, was even more beautiful than the simple exterior set, if you can believe it! The stage was small, so the flexible cast had set it up so that not only was the Christmas play performed in front of the audience, but also in the aisles next to the audience. It was a small and simple interior set, with just a couple of street lamps and garlands, but the flexible cast was able to bring the Christmas play alive for the audience. Make the Best of Your Christmas Season With a Christmas Play
