Take In The Majestic Exquisiteness of Copper Canyon Mexico

By Debrah Langston

The small town of Batopilas, once a silver mining town, sits at the base of a canyon near the Batopilas River. One of the most scenic views to be had in the Copper Canyon area is on the drive from the town of Creel to Batopilas, which passes through several small villages before dipping into the canyon on a set of switchbacks and bridges with breathtaking views. It is possible to stay in Batopilas, although the accommodations may be more rustic than the larger town of Creel.

Whether visitors are looking for a cheap vacation or a high end experience, lodging is easy to find. At the lowest end are campsites which can be hiked to on one's own or found with the help of a guide and burros to carry supplies. Hostels are also easy to come by. Mid-level hotels make the stay in the Copper Canyons a little more comfortable, and at the upper end are resorts and lodges complete with spas and luxury dining.

Water attractions are some of the most memorable parts of any vacation to Copper Canyon. Near the town of Creel is the most well known area for hot springs and was developed into concrete pools. Many other undeveloped pools sit among the cliffs and pines, some easy to find and others off the beaten path, but all offering spectacular views.

Buses from El Paso or Chihuahua are also available range from crowded local buses to high end tourist buses equipped with televisions. It is also possible to drive to Creel, although it is advisable to check with government websites beforehand to understand what is required to bring a vehicle over the border.

Creel is the largest town near the canyons and offers the most comfortable accommodations and amenities for travelers. From here it is possible to take several day trips and many find it the best place to base their adventures. Bike and ATV rentals as well as guided tours and horseback excursions often begin in the town. Helicopter rides to view the canyons begin here as well. The Valley of the Monks and the Valley of the Frogs, both known for their unusual rock formations, are an easy distance from the town.
