Central Portugal for a Break?

The guest to Portugal is spoilt for choice on where to visit. It has beautiful sandy beaches in the South and bountiful forests and snow-capped mountains in the North and Central areas. Eucalyptus and pine trees cover the valleys and mountains of Central Portgual, giving it the name of the "Green Heart" of Portugal. Stunning natural beauty is prevalent in Central Portugal. When visiting Central Portugal, it is hard to miss the natural beauty of the area.

It is key to hire a car to investigate the beauty of rural Central Portugal and the beaches of its Silver Coast. Supplementing the beauty of the forests, mountains and rivers in Central Portugal are a variety of adventure passtimes for those who are dynamic\sporty. These include fishing, mountain-biking, kayaking, mountaineering and hiking. River beaches are a superb alternative to those on the coast. They proffer many facilities such as bars and restaurants, pedal boats and a variety of water sports. Golf resorts like the Montebello Golf and Spa Resort set in superb, relaxing surroundings are also available in Central Portugal. Plus, a person could take a jaunt to the historic university city of Coimbra.

The capital of Portugal from 1139 to 1260 was Coimbra. However, it is now the principal city of the Central region. Central Portugal's main tourist attraction is the University of Coimbra. It is situated on a hill that prevails over the city and it is the primary seat of learning in Portugal. The university has a exquisite Baroque Chapel; a Library which is home to over 300,000 historical books and delicately decorated ceilings; and some of the most beautiful gardens in Europe are here, of note are the 18th century Botanical gardens.

Coimbra was erstwhile a Roman enclave of the Aeminium, and some remains are still there, such as an aqueduct and cryptoporticus and the close ancient city of Conimbriga has some of the most impressive Roman ruins located anywhere in Europe. Further to Roman history, there are a fair collection of museums in Coimbra. There is the City Museum and the Museo Nacional Machado de Castro, the most important in Portugal.

The River Mondego winds through the valleys of Central Portugal and is its life-blood. The river tflows through the towns, villages and mountains in imajestic fashion, however, it is at its best as it flows through Coimbra. It is viable to enjoy the river in many ways. Either by kayak, ferry ride or sitting having a cold drink on its banks.

The hospitality, warmth and friendliness of the Portugese people is famous. It is especially the case in Central Portugal. A repayment of homemade wine or port is frequently the payoff for those who attempt to acquire and speak to locals, after making the effort to acquire the basics of this often challenging language.
