By Nicole Smith

Retro lingerie is coming back into fashion and more and more women are wearing items like corsets, stockings, and suspenders. There's a great range of colours, styles, and designs to choose from but if you're new to the retro lingerie scene then choosing the right items can seem baffling at first. Do you know your corset from your girdle and do you think stockings and suspender belts need to match? With out handy guide we aim to answer these questions and enable you to choose the retro lingerie that is just right for your tastes.

The corset is one of the best known and most popular types of retro lingerie. Even though it should traditionally be worn as an undergarment it is also popular to wear them on show for a bold and confident look. The corset is made from a stiff material which is tightened around the body with lace or string ties. This cinches the body shape so that the tummy is flatted and the waist shrunk.

Girdles have a similar aim in mind. They are designed to be worn over the tummy in order to flatten it and they can be used under gowns and dresses or under everyday clothing in order to give you the perfect silhouette shape. You can achieve a beautiful look with a flatter tummy, thinner waist, and a shapely bottom when you don a girdle.

Before the tights took over, stockings and suspenders were incredibly popular forms of lingerie and underwear. They were especially popular in the 1940s and 1950s. Suspenders and suspender belts don't need to match, and they can look equally great if they are in contrasting colours. The suspender belt holds the stockings up and the whole ensemble can be combined with a beautiful and vintage looking garter that completes the outfit perfectly. Pin up stockings are really coming back in fashion and can give you a feeling of confidence while making sure you look as stunning as a 1950s pinup.

Retro lingerie can be worn for big events or for everyday use. Items like corsets and girdles are especially popular for wearing under ball gowns and wedding dresses because they help to create the perfect silhouette shape for your body. They flatten the tummy, minimise the size of the waist, and ensure that you have a shapely bottom. Stockings and suspenders, as well as items like bullet bras or cone bras are also available in a great range of colours and designs.
