Creating an Optimal Study Area

By Carrie Pepper

You have exams coming up and you have a stack of books in front of you. The clock is ticking and you know that you have more to read than there are hours left. How can you create a study area that is conducive to your success and make sure that you get the most out of the time you have?

If you like conversation and activity, you may prefer studying at a local coffee shop, but if you're one who needs total silence, then you will want to find a quiet cubby to curl up in with your study materials. Find what feels right and works best for your personality. Many of us think that if we have always studied at one place (our desk at home, our office) that's the only place. Get creative and really set up a place that's fun, unique and creates energy during study time.

Most study sessions are pretty intense, especially if you're cramming for exams. Make sure you have three key things at all times: water, good light and a comfortable chair with back support. You don't want anything that diverts your attention away from the task at hand.

When you find your perfect study spot, wherever it may be, make sure you have good online access. Keep some lap blankets handy for chilly nights of reading those tomes and a little fan comes in handy when the air gets still and stuffy. Make the room fit your personality. Cell phones are great, but when studying, leave yours at home, or off. You can check messages later.

Studying tends to be rather sedentary so mix it up a bit by adding in regular stretch breaks. Keep some high energy, health snacks with you in a container (raisins, dried fruit and nuts are good brain food) and remember to study at the time that you feel most energized. This is early morning for some, late night for others. Your body has a clock when it performs at its optimum, so pay attention.
