Sunless Tanning Products -What They Are and What They Do

By Adela Popescu

The advantage of sunless tanning products is that you can get a great looking tan without exposing yourself to ultra violet rays. There are now more products of this kind than ever before, as the demand for such safe alternative grows. We'll now survey some of the more popular sunless tanning products to give you a better idea of what you can find and which ones work best.

Most sunless tanning products rely on the chemical known as DHA, which works on the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin. DHA is a colorless sugar-like material, that when mixed with dead skin cells cause a color change. Instead of spending several hours in the sun, you can accomplish the same look in about an hour depending on the product you use. The product will give you the tan for up to a week; more will be needed as the color fades. Dermatologists acknowledge DHA is a safe, making it a great replacement for tanning beds.

This tanning method uses DHA, a product contained in many cosmetics as well as tanning products, and is considered safe. It's also more efficient than UV tanning, as one application can give you the equivalent of six tanning bed sessions.

Make sure you wear gloves when applying the product, or you could end up with stained hands. Sunless tanning products usually don't irritate the skin, but if you shave right before using one this could cause a problem, so it's best not to do this. Every product is a little different, so it's also important to read the instructions before doing an application.

The majority of tanning salons use fluorescent tubes that transmit Ultraviolet (UV) Rays, which resemble natural sunlight, in their tanning beds. At the same time as giving you a natural looking tan, you have the disadvantage of exposure to direct sunlight. UV Rays exacerbate the chance of getting skin cancer when used for long periods of time. Also, regular use of tanning beds has often shown an increase in wrinkles and premature aging of the skin. You can prevent these problems by using a sunless tanning product and you will be better off.

The above are just some of the ways you can safely and conveniently get a great looking tan. A certain amount of sunlight is healthy, but it's well known that too much poses many risks. Unless you live in a tropical climate, you're also limited by the weather and seasons. No matter where you live, though, you can safely make use of sunless tanning products.
