Identifying The Common Lawn Problems

By Denver Burke

It is the time of year when the snow melts and we see the patchy brown and yellow portions of turf that indicate we have lawn problems. The following are common problems and simple solutions to try.

Critters

It is not difficult to identify damage from insects in your yard. Locate the large circular spots that are primarily in sunny areas, roll a part of the grass back, and peer beneath. If you see chinch bugs and grubs easily then you have identified your problem. These insects bring other animals such as skunks, birds, moles, and raccoons into your yard and cause them to dig into your grass in an attempt to feed on them. Fortunately, there is a simply solution: treat the affected areas with an insecticide. Ensure that safety precautions are taken.

Lawn Disease

Viruses, fungus, and bacteria can attack your grass causing unsightly issues which are not identifiable by the human eye. Irregular or circle shaped spots of browning grass or a general thinning and browning may indicate an infection. This will need to be identified and treated by a professional turf contractor.

Ugly Green Growths

Weeds in your grass are the most frequent problem. They consume the water, nutrients, space, and light from your grass and can easily overtake it. A preventative solution may be to mow at a higher level as weeds will thrive in the shorter grass. To eliminate weeds select an herbicide specifically designed for the type of weed located in your yard.

Although lawn problems are unsightly when they first appear they can generally be treated with an insecticide or herbicide designated for that specific problem. If you have tried several solutions and are unable to solve the problem you may need to consult a yard expert who has access to chemicals that are not accessible to the general public.
