Colleges In Westchester Provide Advantage For In-State Students

By Wendy Salas

Colleges in Westchester are a great option for students who plan to stay local. Students who live in Westchester have an advantage because there are plenty of schools to choose from. Plus, tuition is cheaper when you attend school in-state.

For financial reasons, a lot of students prefer to stay local when going to school. They get their Associate's Degree at a community college first. Then, they get a Bachelor's Degree at a more expensive school. With this plan, students take out much less loans and acquire less debt.

You can study just about anything at colleges in Westchester. Some students study engineering, while others study fashion. The possibilities are endless.

One important thing to know is that you receive an Associate's Degree at community college, not a Bachelor's Degree. This can cause a problem if you do not plan ahead. To avoid complications, make sure you research schools ahead of time. Make sure that the community college credits will transfer to the four-year school you plan to attend afterwards. This way, you won't have to re-take classes and waste money on credits that you already completed.

Concordia College is an example of a small local school. Others like Westchester Community College are fairly large. Students usually commute to school when they study local. You do have the choice of staying on campus if you would like. Mercy College is an example of a school that has dorms available for the students.

Pell Grants are for any student who demonstrates financial need. The Tuition Assistance Program, or TAP, is especially for New York, in-state students. These grants are a supplement to Pell Grants. TAP is another incentive for staying local. You will receive more financial aid.

Not everyone wants to stay local, however. The need to experience new cultures and meet new friends may encourage some students to go out of state. That is totally fine. College is a time to be independent. If you make the choice to go out of state, it may be a good idea to apply for scholarships. Scholarships are available for students no matter what school they go to. There are scholarships for everyone, including the A student as well as the star basketball player.

Many students are attracted to colleges in Westchester. You can't blame them. There are such beautiful campuses as well as endless majors to choose from. That is why students even go to school there from different counties.
