Cashmere gloves the fundamental luxury

By Pippa Hawthorn

You can feel the quality of Cashmere by touching or stroking it. The posh and softness of the fibre is what makes cahmere unique. The wool is produced from the cashmere goat. Cashmere goats produce a double fleece that is composed of a fine, soft undercoat or underdown of hair mingled with a straighter and much harder outer shell of hair called guard hair which is not used.

For the fine underdown to be sold and processed further, it's got to be de-haired. De-hairing is a mechanical process that separates the coarse hairs from the fine hair. Once the fiber has been thru the systems of de-hairing, washing, carding it is ready either to spin ensuing cashmere.

The fiber is sometimes called pashm (Persian for wool) or pashmina (Persian word gleaned from Pashm) for its use in the hand-crafted scarfs of Kashmir. This goes back to the third century BC. The word cashmere derives from a very old spelling of Kashmir. Cashmere is fine in texture, and powerful, light, and soft. Clothes made from it provide excellent insulation.

The cashmere is then ready to be dyed and converted into yarn and fabric used in our cashmere duds. Gloves, socks, hats and headscarfs.
