How are Hotels Rating?

By Fiona Gray

Many people travel for various reasons. Professionals travel frequently and retirees are another group who often take holidays now they have the time. Once the flight is resolved, the next most important item on the travel check-list is accommodation. The hotel industry has become increasingly competitive and they are offering more and more in a bid to out-perform their rivals.

Hotels cater for all kinds of customers and budgets. There are both budget and grand hotels as well as more specific kinds such as convention or airport hotels. They are more typically classed by a star, however. The star rating takes intro account various elements such as where the hotel is located, the rate of a room and the level of customer service. Commercial hotels, for example, are more often than not based in the city centre to cater for professionals who are willing to pay more and whom are likely to attend meetings in the city.

A number of countries developed the star rating together. It was decided that there needed to be an easy way for travellers to define the quality of a hotel and to quickly assess whether it fit their needs or not. Private agencies or governments decide upon the rating.

Of course, any traveller would opt to stay in a 5* hotel if money were no object, the rating system has worked in that regard. The level of personalised service with this rating is second to none and they have all the features you could want such as a swimming pool, a luxury health club and a gourmet restaurant. There are other features and amenities which are typical of other ratings also. With a 1* hotel, you get only your basic requirements catered for and dining and transport facilities usually see you having to leave the hotel which is fine by many who prefer not to be confined to the hotel anyway.

Having knowledge of what features and facilities a prospective hotel has is always an advantage and limits any 'surprises'. It also cuts out a lot of research time. The star rating gives you a good idea of what to expect.
